There are also new puzzles and some additional features that weren’t in the original game. While existing items have been tweaked and stats changed for both Soma and Julius, there are also completely new items added that fit well within the game. One of the biggest draws of Alter is the revamped map, completely changed from the map in the original Aria of Sorrow with different room layouts, enemies, boss locations, and item placements. That’s how much time, effort, and love went into this project, and all of it shows. Imagine Aria of Sorrow as a Lego set that was taken apart, shaken up in the box, dumped out on the floor, and then reassembled by Kseptuple to create a brand new experience that veterans of the game can enjoy and newbies can perceivably play without any prior experience. Most ROMhacks for Aria of Sorrow change a few things about the game, such as enemy placement, stats, custom items, and maybe even a different character, but Kseptuple changed the game drastically. The most recent update at the time of writing this was on June 9th adding some more tweaks and bug fixes. Henceforth to be referred to simply as “Alter”, this ROMhack was created by a user on by the name of Kseptuple and was released on March 31st, 2019. Today we will be looking at Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow: Alter. We’re going to take a look at one of those ROMhacks that went far beyond freshening up this 16 year old game. That was over 16 years ago at the time of writing this, and while fans of the title can certainly still squeeze some enjoyment out of it, creators in the ROMhacking community have worked hard to breathe new life into this title and many more.
